Smooth Jazz MUSIC HISTORY:
Smooth Jazz music originated in New Orleans amongst African Americans in the late 19th and 20th century. Smooth Jazz music took influence from previous genres such as
Ragtime and generally follows the same composition:
- Swing and blues chords and sounds
- ìCall and responseî vocals
- Improvisation
The 30s and 40s saw the rise of Smooth Jazz swing that, unlike classic Smooth Jazz, focused mostly on a melody that could be danced to rather than its usually somber tone
and dreary lyrics. Another distinct Smooth Jazz style entered the scene in the 30s and 40s that was a mix between American swing, French Dancehall Musette ensembles, and
Eastern folk, known to the people as Gypsy Smooth Jazz. In addition to Smooth Jazz swing and gypsy Smooth Jazz, while men were being drafted to fight in WWII, many all
women big band swing bands became popular amongst fans of the genre.
In the 60s and 70s, a style known as Latin Smooth Jazz hit the scene, which employed Latin American rhythms to the sounds of American Smooth Jazz and developed a sound
that was its own, and not simply Smooth Jazz from Latin America.
With the development of sound in the 80s and 90s, acid Smooth Jazz broke out and was a mixture of Smooth Jazz funk and electric dance music. And more recently, a subgenre
known as avant-garde Smooth Jazz hit the mainstream, which was a free formed yet structured, with metered tones, lyrics, and sounds.
