As a TOEFL student I find the speaking tasks I & II to be difficult as it require fast preparation and quick wits. As the preparation time is just 15 seconds,
mastering this task requires practice in brainstorming, quick identification of points, and completing the response not less, not more but to exactly cover the allocated
time of 45 seconds. Despite having completed primary, secondary and tertiary education in English and being a capable speaker in daily contexts, I still require more
practice to master this section.
This section does not take much time. A single task is just 60 seconds and it does not require any other material except the topic and a timer to practice. Therefore, this
task can be practiced literally anywhere given that the above two requirements are provided.
Personally, I am doing TOEFL while working. Most TOEFL students are doing while either working or reading for a degree. Therefore, it may be difficult for them to find the
time to sit down, open a laptop and practice. Personally, it is difficult for me to find the time for that. Moreover, getting ready to practice takes more than 60
seconds!
I found that I am able to find time in between other daily routines. Especially when I am commuting to work. It has a one and a half to two hours commute to my work place
from home. Since I travel by bus, if I am able to practice this task using a mobile phone, that one and half to two hours time I sit in the bus can be productively
utilized. This lead me to look for Android applications to practice the speaking tasks.
However, I was not able to find an application for my liking. Most TOEFL applications are designed to aid in all the areas of the test. These offer few tests most cases
one or two. In some cases, payments have to be made to unlock more tests. Therefore, these apps do not offer sufficient practice for speaking as two tests only constitutes
to two speaking questions.
Despite this, tones of free speaking task I, II practice questions are available online. This lead me to develop this application. It is a simplistic, purpose built
application for speaking tasks I and II. It provides questions and timing for each question (both preparation and response times). A beep mechanism is used to notify the
end of preparation time and response time.
This app is opensource. It does not contain Ads or any other means to gain a monetary advantage. This was purely developed to help me practice this section. Source code
and the question list of the application can be found in the GitHub page: https://github.com/rsachira/toeflspeaking
Any interested developers can contribute to this application by adding features and questions as they see fit by sending pull requests. If you are not a developer, and yet
